The project is a collaboration among the FDA, Dassault Systmes, and dozens of medical researchers, device manufacturers, and clinicians.The model exists on the Dassault Systmes 3DExperience platform. Engineers can access it and run virtual tests via the cloud, Colombel said, or they can use it as the foundation of their own computer models to perform specific types of virtual tests.In September 2017, for example, Stanford University researchers unveiled their own additions t o the Living Heart. Pharmaceutical companies can use that Stanford-created model to ensure the drugs theyre developing dont induce cardiac arrhythmia, a potentially fatal irregular heartbeat, said Francisco Sahli, a Stanford mechanical engineering doctoral student who worked on the specialized model.Currently, testing for the risk of cardiac arrhythmias can take years and involves costly animal and human studies, Sahli said.To allow virtual testing, the Stanford team added detailed cellular models to the Living Heart and gave testers the ability to differentiate cell types within heart tissue. Those running the tests can also measure the models beating heart via electro-cardiogram.Simulation and modeling tools also help engineers find the best design for their medical devices.Engineers at Eli Lilly working with the companys KwikPen and Trulicity needle-based insulin delivery devices had to determine whether they were compatible with a tapered needle from a third-party supplier.It wa snt a straightforward task.You have two considerations when youre designing these, said Bernard McGarvey, an engineering fellow at Eli Lilly. Youre trying to force liquid through a needle, so youd like to use a needle with a bigger inside diameter so youd use less force to push the medicine through.But you also have to worry about the patient experience, he said. Imagine trying to puncture your skin with a 1-millimeter needle. The smaller the needle, the less the pain to a patient.Lilly engineers used COMSOL Multiphysics modeling software to simulate what would happen to the fluid within a potential suppliers tapered needle when a patient exerted enough force to deliver the shot.The models found the proposed needle could cut the required delivery force by 40 to 50 percent and deliver the correct amount of insulin while still tapering to a fine point, McGarvey said.Individualized DevicesOther design concerns arise when manufacturers turn to additive manufacturing, a technology that e nables companies to produce parts made from a variety of metals and plastics in very specific, even never-before-seen, shapes that are customized to particular users.When engineers have historically designed products theyd think about the functional and safety requirements and then come up with the shape, Siemenss Thompson said. But theyd always be at least a little constrained by traditional manufacturing processes injection molding, machining, stamping, forming, and folding. If you couldnt make it that way, itd be off the table.Objects produced via additive manufacturing neednt hew to the traditional shapes made by the usual manufacturing methods.Thats important for biomedical design because theres always been this need for organic shapes to fit within the human body, which is, by definition, organic, Thompson said. If engineers are able to take organic shape into account and they have a manufacturing method that works with even a lot size of onewhy cant they design products speci fically tailored to the patients body?Those days are coming, said Gaurav Manchanda, vice president of market development at Formlabs, which makes 3-D printers used in healthcare and other industries.Hospital systems, medical schools, and even doctors offices use the printers to produce physical models specific to an individuals anatomy. Surgeons use the printed medical models to plan the patients surgery, Manchanda said.To get those specialized models, images of the pertinent part of a patients anatomytaken from magnetic resonance images and computer tomography scansare cleaned up and turned into printable files with software from Formlabs partner company Materialise.So instead of looking at a 2-D film and trying to visualize whats happening inside the body, these 3-D medical models make a huge difference in saving time before the procedure, Manchanda said.As the complexity goes up, the benefits go up as well, he added. If you have a pediatric heart patient, for instance, two surgeo ns can be looking at the same model as they prep and plan the surgery. Or in the operating room, a scrub nurse might hold up the model for the surgeon to use as reference during the operation.DJO Surgical, which makes hip, knee, elbow, and other implants departureed using a Formlab desktop printer in May 2017. Eight months later, the Austin, Texas, company had seen prototyping costs drop by 64 percent even as prototyping rate increased by four-and-a-half times, said Alex Drew, a DJO project mechanical engineer.The company had been using a service bureau to print prototypes, but the process was expensive and could take more than a week, so engineers used the option sparingly, Drew said. In light of those drawbacks it seemed silly not to have a 3-D printer in house, he said.Now engineers get immediate feedback from surgeons who implant 3-D prototypes in the companys on-site operating room. The surgeon carries out the operation from beginning to end on a cadaver and then answer what Dr ew called a laundry list of engineering questions. The cycle is so fast that when surgeons offer suggestions after a morning operation, engineers can redesign the implant and print it up that afternoon, ready for another trial operation the next morning.Recently DJO engineers came up with a unique way to study how a hip-implant prototype was positioned within the body.In some cases, you might need the implant to make contact with a specific part of the anatomy and youd use an X-ray to look at fit, Drew said.The engineers designed the implant to leave interior passageways when printed. Those channels can be laced with wires that show up more clearly on an x-ray than the implant itself.DJO Surgical engineers also used 3-D printed parts to run packaging tests to ensure implants remain safe and sterile during shipment on rolling, bouncing trucks. Were looking to see if the packaging develops holes, if the seals on the hausintern packaging thats keeping the parts sterile stay intact over time, Drew said.A recent transportation test would have called for engineers to source 300 parts to run the tests. Finding and ordering those parts would have added months to the project. Instead, engineers printed many of the needed parts within three weeks and moved forward with testing, Drew said.He estimates that eight months and 425 jobs after bringing in the printer DJO saved $60,000 in prototyping costs.The DJO story points to the kinds of cost savings and competitive edge medical device designers gain when they incorporate new technologies into testing and validation.Speed to market is shortened because time can be saved on some of the testing, said J. Freddy Hansen, staff research physicist at Abbott Labs in Pleasanton, Calif. Its also worth mentioning that with recent changes to the U.S. patent law, which is now first-to-file instead of first-to-invent, simulation can also speed up the intellectual property process, which is another competitive advantage.And, as the FDAs embrace of modeling and simulation shows, todays new engineering technology may be a regular part of tomorrows FDA approval submission.Jean Thilmany is a technology writer based in St. Paul, Minn.SIDEBAR Better Modeling of Heat Treatment Doctors have increasingly turned to heat treatments to kill dangerous tissues, such as cancers. In the last 20 years, this treatment, also called ablation, has delivered the heat typically via an alternating electric current travelling along a catheter at radio frequencies (350500 kHz).A new technique promises to deliver the heat with greater precision and control by increasing the frequency of the current to 300 MHz to 300 GHz. This microwave ablation technology is now commercially available.The challenge is to monitor the ablation performance in real-time, said Casey Ladtkow, principal engineer in the Early Technologies unit of Medtronics Minimally Invasive Therapies Group. When performing ablations, physicians dont have continuous real-time feedb ack on the effectiveness of their procedure. If they could know exactly what is happening in real-time from start to finish, the effectiveness of ablation treatment would increase, he said.Ladtkow and his team are using COMSOL Multiphysics software to develop new ablation probes in order to increase performance predictability and effectiveness. One development-stage project involves incorporating radiometers into the ablation probes in order to provide real-time data. That will enable a clinician to fine-tune the zone as needed during the procedure, and to make sure the heating effect destroys the targeted tissues while minimizing effects on the surrounding healthy tissue.The team uses multiphysics simulation to better understand and optimize the properties of the probes. The performance and accuracy of microwave ablation systems are affected by a number of dynamic factors that arise simultaneously in multiple physics domains, Ladtkow said. Simulating coupled thermal and electromagn etic effects around the radiative probe hardware helped the team determine radiometric performance under different conditions.Based on our simulations, we are now realizing the potential to introduce ablation devices that will allow clinicians to not only deliver a precise energy dose, but also monitor ablations in real time, Ladtkow said. He’d been married for a year, he had a nice apartment on the Upper West Side and he couldn’t shake a number that he’d come across in his research. Web usage, he had  learned, was growing by 2,300 percent per year.He had what would become a historic idea: an Internet bookstore, with millions of titles- the kind of thing that couldn’t happen in a brick-and-mortar shop. As Bezos recalled it on stage at this year’s  Summit conference in Los Angeles,  he told his boss about it; the supervisor said that it was indeed a nice idea, but probably better suited for someone who didn’t already have a good job. He’d better take a couple days to think about it. So he did.“Those decisions, they’re not major business decisions- they are, ‘what does your heart say?’” Bezos recalled, sitting on stage with his brother, Mark. “The best way to think about it was to pr oject myself forward to age 80. When I’m 80 years old, I want to have minimized the number of regrets that I have.” Hence the question he posed to himself:  50 years in the future, what would I regret?“You murder somebody, you regret that,” Bezos said with a laugh. “But our biggest regrets are acts of omission, paths not taken. They haunt us. You wonder what would have happened:  â€˜I loved that person and never told them and then they married somebody else.’” Things immediately became obvious: at 80, Bezos knew he’d never regret trying this thing he was so excited about- even if it failed. But he also knew he’d be haunted by it if he didn’t try.There was a “one hundred percent chance of regret if I didn’t try, and basically a zero percent chance if I tried and failed,”  the world’s richest man  said. “I think that’s a useful measure for making important life decisions.”The way the Amazon founder thought through this judgement call feeds into one of neuroscience’s key insights about how we make decisions. Sh aver is a PGA Professional and is the head golf pro at The Abaco Club on Winding Bay on Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Abaco is  a private sporting club with a world-renowned Scottish-style links golf course that runs along a 2.5-mile absolutely pristine white beach. In other words, it is a golfing mecca.  The club is also the host of the Web.com Tour’s  Bahamas  Great Abaco Classic, which draws some of the best players in the world.He told Ladders, “A pre-shot routine is vital to the success of both amateur and professional golfers. Routines in life are a sequence of actions regularly followed to produce an organized action or result. To shoot lower scores a pre-shot routine is important to ensure your thoughts are organized, without a good Pre-Shot routine your opening the door for tension and anxiety to creep in which are both killers of the golf swing.”The importance of the pre-shot routineAs a novice (actually is there a word that precedes beginner that also means abs olutely atrocious because that’s what I am) the concept of the pre-shot routine is quite appealing as anything to mitigate the anxiety of hitting the ball would be a great help. The first task is to come up with the routine that is going to set you up for success.Shaver says, “It starts behind the ball, looking down the line of play to get a visual for the shot. I then stand parallel to the line of play, still well behind the ball and make one to three practice swings, looking to feel the swing that I want to make for that shot. Now I am behind the ball, with arms hanging low and trying to get as loose and relaxed as possible. I now look down the line of play and bring my line of play in, closer to the ball (about 3 feet).“I am now staring at the spot 3 feet in front of the ball and approaching the ball while still staring at that spot until I get my feet parallel to the spot and the line of play. Now that I am in a good set-up position and ready to make the swing I waggle and look, a second waggle and a look and as soon as my club touches the ground after the second waggle and look I swing.”So how does one develop an effective pre-shot routine? Shaver says, especially for beginners, a lesson is the best way to go â€" and one with a PGA professional like himself would be best: “I ask my students what their pre-shot routine is when working on course management, this will set them up for success in both practice rounds and tournament rounds.”Just like a pre-shot routine can make you a better player, a routine, in general, can boost your productivity and the way you approach life overall.Mariana Plata of Psychology Today wrote of routines, “The reason behind this is that when we organize ourselves and know what to expect, it’s easier to actively work towards counteracting the thoughts and symptoms of any of the aforementioned mental health conditions [bipolar disorder,  addiction,  depression, etc.,]She cited a  study that people that use daytime routines sleep better which can help to lessen the risk for developing mental health disorders.Loosen upThe pre-shot routine has the same impact for an anxious golfer. Shaver told Ladders, “Breathing is key to have less anxiety on the course and this relates to the pre-shot routine. When golfers are feeling pressure to hit a good shot breathing provides more oxygen to our body which relaxes our muscles and provides a better opportunity for a fluid swing. Inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth three to five times before hitting a shot will assist in eliminating anxiety especially during tense situations.”It also helps to play on a great golf course. The iconic four-seat muscle car is revered for its revved up performance, its revolutionary profile, and its lasting reverberations in American popular culture. Ford and several Mustang fan organizations have big plans to celebrate the milestone, kicking off in Norman, OK, with a bi-directional long-distance Pony Drive. Twin convoys of Mustangs and their devoted drivers will head en masse to two simultaneous Ford-sanctioned events at speedways in Las Vegas and Charlotte over Easter weekend. But you dont need to be there or even be a Mustang fan to appreciate the cars dual impact on automotive engineering and popular culture. In celebration of the Mustangs milestone, here are 10 of the most notable facts from the pony cars past. 10. Father of the Pony The genesis of the Mustang begins with the professional rise of engineer Lee Iacocca the man often considered, over his objections, to be the Father of the Mustang. From the beginning, the Mustang was a pacesetter in design and performance, but it was not easy to get it out of the Ford starting gate. This pony was too wild it bucked tradition, but it couldnt throw the tenacious engineer-turned-executive. Iacocca graduated with an undergraduate engineering degree from Lehigh University and went on to earn a masters from Princeton in 1946. He joined Ford as an engineering trainee the same year. Though his talents drew him to sales, his engineering know-how would serve him well. Recently kicked upstairs to head the Ford division, Iacocca stepped into his role determined there was a new and yet-to-be identified car buyer out there looking for a dream car that didnt then exist. In 1962, he assembled a super-secret automotive A-team of engineers, designers, product planners, market researchers, and ad men the Fairlane Committee to plot Fords future. A dozen or so clandestine meetings later, muscle car history was made. More than one million Mustangs were built in its first two years of production. It was Fords greatest hit since the Model T. Some team members proposed naming it after things that fly Special Falcon, XT-Bird, Thunderbird II, Comet. Others went for exotic-sounding foreign names Avanti, Avventura, Allegro, Stiletto, Monte Carlo, Torino. Still others voted for a name with four legs Cougar, Bronco, Cheetah, Puma, Colt. Many of these names found their way onto later car emblems, but Ford stuck with Mustang for the sporty low-slung original. Although many fans maintain the Mustang name honors the WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter plane, the moniker has always had an equine connection. The misconception persists because its at least partly true. The airplane was indeed an inspiration for the Mustang name on a long and very preliminary list of ideas pitched for the still-conceptual car. A few years later, on the strength of emblem designer Phillip Clarks vivid sketches of horses in motion, the name was pitched again, this time as a symbol of Americas small, hardy, half-wild horse. Mustang had its brand. 8. E-Guys Finish Last The Mustang success story in many ways begins with an equally famous flop, the Edsel. Originally called the E-car for experimental, Fords new Edsel marquee bombed big. In the early 1960s the multimillion-dollar losses were still racking up. The Edsels status as a lemon soured board chairman Henry Ford II on experimental concepts like the Mustang for years. Fords pejorative tag E-guy meant an executives career was running on fumes. 7. Sexy, Fast, and Cheap? Ford market research showed that young car buyers knew just what they wanted in a car, and it was nothing that didnt already exist. However, those features were impossible to find in the same car. What they wanted was a contradiction in terms, Iacocca told author Robert A. Fria in his history Mustang Genesis. New drivers and young professionals sought the Thunderbirds sex appeal, the Ferraris racy lines, and the Volkswagens compact price tag. At the time, he said, you could not expect to turn heads, win races, or save gas in a car that cost only $2,500. Enter the Mustang. 6. Big Wheel on Campus By 1963, a Mustang experimental prototype was strutting its stuff in exhibitions on major U.S. speedways. Purdue University officials invited Ford to bring the model to campus to give its engineering students a sneak peek at the auto industrys future. They turned out in droves, prompting the company to launch a 17-campus national tour exposing the prototype to more than 63,000 college students. The intent was to interest good engineering students in a Ford career but the company also pre-sold 500 Mustangs in the process. They work under doctors and registered nurses (RNs) in medical offices, hospitals, and health care facilities. They also might provide in-home care. This is a growing occupation with a high rate of job openings, because of the aging of the baby boomer generation. Becoming a licensed practical nurse does not require the same level of education or training as becoming a registered nurse, but they serve a key role in health care by assisting RNs and doctors in the care and treatment of their patients. Licensed Practical Nurse Duties Responsibilities LPNs typically need to be able to handle the following tasks: Monitor patientsMake patients comfortableProvide basic careListen to patientsReport to RNs or doctorsKeep and maintain records LPNs carry out nursing tasks that are more complex than those that nurses aides complete but less complex than the duties of a  registered nurse. Licensed Practical Nurses perform basic nursing functions like changing bandages and wound dressings. They comfort patients and make sure basic needs such as food and fluid intake are in order. Licensed practical nurses may also administer medications in some settings depending on institutional and state standards. The levels of care, such as providing medication, that LPNs can provide varies by state, so those entering the field should review state regulations where they intend to work. Licensed Practical Nurse Salary LPNs generally earn less money than RNs, but their pay will be higher than that of nurses aides. Even small errors with some of these details can have serious consequences, so nurses must be certain to be accurate. Aging baby boomers will require greater health care services so LPNs with certifications or experience with elderly populations will be in the highest demand. Work Environment LPNs work in a variety of health care environments as part of a team that includes doctors, registered nurses, and others. They serve in settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, health clinics, and private physician practices. Some also provide health care services at peoples’ homes. Nurses have to be able to stand on their feet for most of the day. They may need to help lift or move patients as well. Work Schedule Some LPNs work part-time, but most work full-time. Nights, weekends, and holidays are a regular part of many nurses schedules since health care is needed around the clock. Shifts sometimes last longer than eight hours, but they may be part of a shorter work week. No one should be telling you not to enjoy your senior year of college. In fact, embrace it for all its worth and it's worth a lot. Yet, your final year in college is more than a farewell party to your youth; it's time to prep for the next phase of your life. Life after college is rapidly approaching. Are you ready? Here are a few pieces of advice for incoming seniors to help you get the most out of your final year. Life after college: Career or more school? Many students these days are opting to go right from their undergraduate schooling into a grad school program of some sort. The sooner you can figure out which direction you would like to follow, the better. Depending on your field of study, it can be a difficult choice. The sooner you can make it, the easier it will be for you to get all of your ducks in a row. If you're heading to grad school, you need to focus on finding, and getting into, the right school. If you are thinking about jumping into the world of careers, your senior year and life after college will look much different. Prepare your resume Do you have a resume yet? If so, it's time to update it. If not, it's time to build one. If you don't know where to start, there are plenty of places that can help you do it. Include any jobs you've had as well as your education and other experiences that have made you a good candidate for the entry-level jobs you want. There are a lot of ways that your college experiences can boost your resume don't neglect them! Visit your campus career center Your campus is sure to have a career center, and if you haven't taken the time to stop in, you should do so ASAP. The career center is your hub for information on careers, help with your resume, and even advice on what career path might be best for you. Call ahead to set up an appointment, and when you go, bring your resume. Once at the center, talk to a career counselor and let them look over your resume to see if there are any red flags or obvious gaps that you need to address. There are certain classes that are remarkably useful for students in any major. Who couldn't use some more knowledge of technology or business strategy? Make these last credits really work towards your end goal. Examine your classes By the time you get to your senior year, you should know what classes you need to take to finish up your major and/or minor. But what about any elective credits you need to use up? Sure, it might be fun to take something easy and frivolous, but is that the best use of your tuition money? Think carefully about the career field you want to be in and think outside of the box. Which elective courses could help make you look better on your resume? Think about classes that could give you an edge based on your career goals. Here are a few examples: Business Management: You can't go wrong with a class on business communication or any kind of communication, really. The ability to communicate is one of the soft skills employers are always looking for. Human Resources: In human resources, you will spend a lot of time working with computers. Why not advance your skills in programs like Excel or Powerpoint? You'll be a step ahead of your peers. The arts: If you've chosen a path in the arts, it would still be a great idea to sneak in a basic accounting or business class. You may end up running your own business someday as an artist and need that knowledge. Sales: You've probably taken a lot of marketing classes, but what about writing? Most sales jobs require communication through emails and letters. Some even require you to write some ad copy. Get a jump on it now and brush up on those writing skills. These are just a few examples. For any career path, there are electives that may seem unrelated to the field that could actually do you a lot of good. Not sure what to take? Ask your career center representative or your advisor. Look at internships Even if you think you're in pretty good shape with your resume, an internship could be just what you need to get a leg up on the competition for life after college. Look at it this way: You've already put in a lot of hours in school and you are paying them for the privilege to do so. Five Steps from Engineer to Leadership Five Steps from Engineer to Leadership Five Steps from Engineer to Leadership Engineering, by its very nature, is technical work. Leading a team is not. Because the two jobs require different skill sets, engineers who seek managing or executive roles dont always fall into those jobs. They follow a career path that leads to those positions. Before they can become a supervisor, they must show they have the skills needed to lead teams. Dorota Shortell is now chief executive officer at Simplexity Product Development, an engineering product development company, in Portland, Ore. When she began her mechanical engineering career she hadnt planned to enter the C-suite. But in retrospect, she saw how her career was shaped by the skills she demonstrated and the steps she took toward a leadership position. She shared five steps engineers must take if they want to take on leadership positions. 1. Communicate Your Successes Shortell began her career by redesigning an assembly inside a desktop printer. I realized a few weeks in, Im doing all this work, but I dont know if the client really likes the work, she said. I asked the senior engineer on the project if I could give the client a summary report every Friday to make sure theyre OK with the changes before we get too far down the line. The client welcomed the reports because they offered a clear view into the project. Shortell also advocates sharingin other words, communicatingyour successes with higher-ups. Communication is always the difference, Shortell said. You can do great work, but if no one knows about itand your managers are busy peopleyou wont get recognition for it. She points out that she checked with the senior engineer on the project before sending the weekly reports. As we think about our leadership path, we cant just assume were doing to do something and step on others toes. Theyre going to feel youre going over their heads, she said. Theres a balance between advocating for yourself and asking. One thing that helped her climb: she told her boss of her plans for a career as a manager. I talked to my supervisor and said I wanted to become a project manager and asked about the things I can do to get there, she said. The fact I stated that so clearly made a difference. It started give my manager a view of the path along which I wanted to go. Dont be shy to say, Heres the path I want to take, what are the skills I can develop and what is it I need to do to get there. she said. 3. Project Confidence How you present yourself can be just as important as the technical skills you bring to the job. Not that you dont need to know the technical side of things, but showing that you can be a leader is what get you noticed, she said. Shortell believes she was promoted because she was already acting like a senior engineer before she attained that role. Act and dress in a professional manner. Learn and hone soft skills so youre at relative ease among other professionals, she said. Soft skills, including communication techniques, can sometimes be difficult for those engineers who are more comfortable working alone at their desks each day. But, with practice, relating to others becomes easier. 4. Connect with Others Lets call this step making connections rather than networking. That way, this necessary step to a leadership role sounds less intimidating. Networking doesnt have to be hard. Think about it as forming friendships, Shortell said. That the friendship may eventually lead to a new job or a promotion is of secondary value. Reaching out to people, connecting with people, is really important. But I know, as an introvert, its hard, Shortell said. Dont go in saying Heres what I have to sell. Treat it like This might be a cool person to know. Let me find out about them and see if I can help them. A lot of times we want to ensure were successful at something because we dont want to fail. But if you dont fail once in a while youre not stretching yourself, she said. Did I know how to be a CEO? No. Did I know I could learn to do the job? Yes. Im smart. I knew I could ask for help and I knew I could figure it out as I go along, she said. The willingness to step up and to show up gets you noticed, she added. The steps that can help you attain a leadership position will take courage and determination. They may not be easy, but the payoff comes not only in attaining the role you desired, but also in growing as an employee and as a person. Chasing the Career Cheese Make It Swiss. Chasing the Career Cheese Make It Swiss. The “rat race” runs on bait. Everybody knows that. But what is less obvious is that the mice and rats are themselves dangling bait bait with holes in it. The rat race- fierce competition to get and keep jobs, customers, sales or market share- dangles profits, perks, salaries and wages as what is instinctively thought of as the payoff cheese.   But there is that second kind of rat-race career cheese: the bait dangled to lure and motivate prospective and customers, clients, colleagues and current bosses. One of the most prominent forms of this bait is expertise, and one of its most worried-about problems is “holes” in it. Rat-Race Holes How often do you hear someone say, as I did in a spontaneous conversation with a friendly music major at a bus stop recently, that there are too many gaps- holes, if you will- in their professional competence? Failing when comparing oneself with others in one’s field, or worse, with those who are not, and, as a result, feeling threatened, incompetent or just plain lazy by comparison is not an uncommon experience. Even worse is the dawning realization that the gap can’t be bridged- the feeling of being swept up in a rat-race for cheese that simply can’t be won with the cheese one is offering in exchange. Usually it leads to resolutions to work harder, study more, to try to catch up with the pack and to try to learn it all- meanwhile hoping that one’s deficiencies won’t be exposed and that feeling like a fraud will only be temporary. Just as commonly, it leads to futile desperation, chronic frustration and a hovering sense of inadequacy, if not outright feeling like a failure for not measuring up to the challenge and expectations. The Illusion of Wholes without Holes Those were the concerns voiced during our chat at the Gibsons seaside bus stop, by “Riva” (pseudonym), a bright, open undergraduate preparing for a career in music, but nagged by the feeling that she doesn’t know or work hard enough. While waiting for our bus, Riva revealed that feeling and her hope that by studying, practicing and mastering more, she will have a shot at filling in the holes and the gaps in her skill set before others see through them or punch more holes in the flimsiest parts. The problem is that it simply is not possible to eliminate or prevent such holes. That’s what I told her. However, the good news is that neither is it necessary to try, which I also told her. The reason that filling in the holes is neither possible nor necessary is, I said, that knowledge is more like Swiss cheese than like the pizza you may put it on. Competence as More Pizza, or More Swiss Cheese? Thinking that the corpus of professional knowledge and expertise is like a pizza leads to the notion that given a big enough appetite, reach, access and determination, it should be possible to (competitively) gobble up all of it, or at least as much as anyone else. Discovering that others have more or bigger slices of that knowledge and skill pie creates unease, usually in the form of a sense of competitive anxiety, envy, jealousy and feelings of inferiority. But this is a flawed model of learning and career advancement. Swiss cheese provides a better one, and for a number of reasons: In the real world, holes perpetually come and go: Accept the holes. A key thing that makes learning, knowledge and expertise engaging is knowing that they are not static, that, instead, they are always evolving- especially in an innovative, competitive capitalist economy and in an era like the modern one in which research and technology are expanding and advancing at the speed of a blinding, hole-burning laser beam. Old holes get filled in, new ones get created. The foregoing sentence sums up one of the cardinal, yet commonly unrecognized truths of business, education and industry. In fact, some careers are built extensively, if not exclusively, on shooting holes in the careers and beliefs of others, without being limited to the occupations of movie critic, historian, pharmaceutical sales rep, major league pitcher or campaigning politician. Expecting one’s knowledge base to neither have preexisting holes nor to have holes shot into it is like expecting the universe to have no black holes. In fact, in the galaxy of careers, as in the universe itself and in Swiss cheese, the holes will always be among us and a source of their fascination and development. Career holes, like the holes in Swiss cheese, can be defining: A municipal road crew puts up a sign that says, “Men at Work. Caution!”, next to an open manhole in the street under repair. That’s a paradigm case of a job literally and concretely defined, in part, by a hole. A circus is another one, if you think of the rings as holes to be filled with ponies, clowns and dancing bears. Doughnut manufacture is a third. More abstractly viewed, there are careers that require holes in expertise to be viable, credible, justifiable or sustainable. The most obvious instance is military or civilian intelligence, e.g., the CIA and Army recon units, whose entire rationale for existing depends on the assumption that there will always be information holes to be identified, filled and sought. No holes? No need, no job. So, before concluding that holes in your knowledge base are a liability, be sure they aren’t a prerequisite for keeping the job or otherwise an asset, e.g., like the successfully created hole in a donut or the ever-present gaps and holes in military intelligence. More cheese, more holes: A defining principle of careers, on a par with “no pain, no gain”, is, as the CIA example illustrates, “no holes, no cheese”. An important variation on this theme is “more cheese, more holes”. This is a picturesque variant of the cautionary schoolchild’s ditty, which I learned as a child, that proposed, “The more you study, the more you know; the more you know, the more you can forget; the more you can forget, the more you do forget; the more you do forget, the less you know. So why study?” (Apparently it was not among the things that I learned and did forget.) The germane and valid point of this cute sophistry is that every skill-set gain carries the risk of the potential pain of a hole, whether in (other, displaced) memory, knowledge or skill. Choose any career skill; the moment you commit to it, you commit to filling the holes. In committing to filling those holes, you are led to awareness of more holes. This is fractal: holes between cheese within which there are patches with smaller holes between cheese within which there are patches with even smaller holes….ad infinitum. For example, you decide to be a recruiter. So, that fills your career choice hole. But, on the job, you discover holes regarding resume software. You fill that in with familiarization with your company’s resume software. But that creates other holes:   missing knowledge of competing software, or the use of specific features of the software you’re using, questions about how much you should practically or morally rely on impersonal software screening that can kill a candidate’s hopes by crushing his chances. Magnify the cheesy part of the cheese, and you’ll almost always find more holes, even if only smaller ones. Size and proximity of holes count:  On reflection, it should be clear that one of the most important things that matters is that the slice of cheese you’ve bitten into or are offering should be bigger than the closest holes: What this means in professional terms is that peaceful coexistence with career holes is possible and unproblematic, if what you have mastered is more obvious than what you haven’t- either because it dwarfs your ignorance or because the holes in your expertise are distant from your routine performance requirements. A career with more evident areas of incompetence than capability will appear to be like a slice of Swiss cheese with holes that are bigger or more numerous than are its patches of solid cheese- a tenuous, flimsy lattice of competence precariously packaged and unappealingly lacking substance.  So, if your temp service covers a wide range of corporate placements, but IT firms are your bread and butter, put and display your solid expertise patch of cheese on those client slices and hold the retail, accounting and (coles)law holes when pitching a job to an applicant. The key is to showcase what you can do, without calling attention to what you can’t. Seems obvious? Not to Rika and many others like her who are burdened with anxiety and naïve guilt for and while not “plugging” all the holes. To put it metaphorically, slice and place your career Swiss cheese so as to minimize the number and size of holes you expose. In practical terms, this means choosing jobs that showcase your cheese, but hide the holes. If that sounds cunning, well, welcome to the real world, since that’s what happens every day and what many careerists instinctively do. However, the one thing that Rika and the others should never do is to conceal incompetence that will jeopardize the execution of the job description. It is one thing to conceal the fact that you don’t know C++ when the job doesn’t require it; it’s quite another when it does. In short, never package holes as cheese. Transform liability-holes into asset-holes: Suppose Riva graduates and can’t find a job in music, or the job she’s found with a symphony won’t open up for six months. That’s a looming hole, worse in the former case, since unemployment with no end in sight becomes a liability as skills and experience stagnate and as some companies continue to weirdly discriminate against the unemployed. Given that the hole is going to exist in any case and that not only can it be filled, but also that it really needs to be, filling it in with training is a smart idea. Thereby, hole-as-liability is transformed into hole-as-asset, even though, from the employment-history standpoint it remains a hole, despite having been “filled”. What is unique about this phenomenon of semi-filling holes is that the result is a hole that is not a hole, and a liability that is also in part, if not also entirely, an asset. Observe, and Learn If you have not yet grasped the importance of this semi-filling of holes, of recognizing that sometimes holes are an essential part of the job, of the need to focus on the size and proximity of holes, of understanding that filling one hole today is surely to be followed by the need to fill one tomorrow, or of the wisdom of hiding holes, there is one thing you can do to instantly grasp all of these.
